Senior Animal and Theatre Technician

Department: Biological Services Unit (“BSU”)
Organisation: The Griffin Institute (“TGI”)
Reporting to: BSU Lead

Salary: £30,000, plus 27 days holiday
Closing date: 12 August 2022
Hours: 37.5 hours p.w.

 

We are excited to recruit a Senior Animal & Theatre Technician, on a full-time basis. You will be joining the BSU at TGI located in Northwick Park and Saint Mark’s Hospitals in Harrow, North London. The right candidate will be highly skilled and self-motivated. The post holder will be responsible for the daily activities of the BSU/theatre area, including assisting with anaesthesia during surgical procedures and training courses They will be required to work irregular hours in accordance with the needs of the role and be required to participate in a weekend rota and Bank Holidays (including Easter, Christmas and New Year) when requested.

Fundraising Trustee

The Griffin Institute at NPIMR is a not-for-profit, charitable research institute with a vision to be a leading translational biomedical research and training organisation. Our mission is to accelerate innovative solutions that both improve and maximise patient benefits. We are aiming to be a world leading training centre and are in the process of repatriating surgical training from Europe to the UK.

This position is a tremendous opportunity to support the work of a transformative health care charity and help change the face of modern medicine in the UK.

In these times the drastic effect of covid-19 on surgical training has led to a huge demand for the training and education that we provide, with additional fundraising support, our future will be very strong.

The specific responsibilities for the Trustee post will include.

  • To have Trustee oversight/responsibility for a £500k per annum fundraising appeal and £6m capital appeal as well as grant fundraising for specific research projects.
  • Chair a Fundraising Board and be involved in the selection and recruitment of suitable Board members who will bring support and complementary business, community, and social networks with them.
  • Prepared to lead by example by approaching warm connections for support and/or making a proportionate donation to the Griffin Institute at an early stage.
  • Take a critical look at current fundraising strategy and support the creation of a new and updated fundraising plan.
  • Encourage an entrepreneurial fundraising culture.
  • Act as an ambassador for the charity
  • Contribute knowledge of fundraising tools, techniques, and strategies.
  • Support the fundraising team with advice and guidance.

 

 

Essential Qualifications required:

  • Excellent networking skills, influencing and communication skills.
  • Excellent existing peer networks
  • Ability to influence peers.
  • Someone with sufficient fundraising / income generation knowledge
  • Experience of diverse fundraising practices – corporate and philanthropic giving, and trusts and foundations would be valuable.

 

 

Essential Qualifications required:

  • Knowledge of marketing including digital or social media.
  • Knowledge of the scientific/health sector

Manager/Director of Preclinical Services and Surgery

Department: CRO
Reporting to: CEO
Managing: Study Directors, Research Assistants, Theatre and BSU staff

Working relationships: It is important for this post to establish good relationships across the organisation, its clients, and potential clients

Overall purpose of Role

  • To create an excellent pre-clinical facility with scientific and surgical expertise. This includes preclinical research for Neurovascular, Orthopaedic, Wound healing, Endoscopic, Biomaterial and Medical device studies
  • To establish the Griffin Institute as experts in experimental surgery and preclinical studies

Main Duties and Key Responsibilities

  • To create and oversee a strategy for the next 3 and 5 years for the growth and breadth of pre-clinical studies, setting the framework for the research services provided by the institute and reaching out to potential customers
  • The majority of this will be developing protocols and testing novel ex-vivo and in-vivo devices aimed to improve surgical outcomes
  • To provide surgical expertise for pre-clinical studies, improving the standards of surgery at TGI and acting as a surgeon for more complex surgery
  • To oversee quality and compliance for the department, which includes acting as Accountable Officer for GLP and ensuring that all requirements under ASPA are met by the department, liaising with the Home Office as necessary
  • To develop surgical device collaborations between Academics, NHS Trusts, SMEs, and other commercial partners
  • Forming a bridge between pre-clinical scientific research and training, enabling new products to go to market
  • Managing the budget for the department, in particular monitoring and reporting on the income target and pipeline
  • Developing and reporting KPIs to measure the impact of the research and progress into patients

Required skills, knowledge and qualifications

  • To be qualified at Post Doctorate level or with a medical or veterinary qualification
  • To have experience with medical devices research and commercialisation
  • Experience in inputting into and developing protocols
  • To have personal experimental surgical expertise
  • To have successfully managed scientific teams
  • Experience of GLP and if possible, to have acted as designated GLP operator
  • To have held a home office licence and operated at Study Director/PI level
  • Excellent communicator and collaborator
  • Management experience including overseeing budgets
  • Experience of growing a scientific business
  • Experience of training and developing staff
  • To be confident in working with stakeholders and business development
